SAN DIEGO, CA
"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined."
I know, super original epigraph for a travel blog. What can I say? Sometimes life just makes you want to Thoreau up.
My circumstances have changed recently, affording me a rare opportunity to follow my more free-spirited instincts. Doors closing, windows opening, that sort of thing. So I'm heading east across the U.S., to visit family, friends, and craft breweries I wouldn't otherwise.
In those long stretches of the country where I don't know a soul (i.e., the South), I'm resorting to CouchSurfing.org. I went to a local meetup recently at Hamilton's in South Park and was encouraged by the worldliness, warmth and enthusiasm of the sixty or so members that attended. I look forward to sharing more great experiences here soon.
I'm driving a 1998 RAV4 named Sebastian. He brought me down here from Portland almost nine months ago and will continue to serve me until either he blows up or I can afford a Tesla. (Since he’s a Toyota and I don’t have a job, neither is likely anytime soon.) Sebastian has 201k miles, his windows stick sometimes, and his cruise control busted an hour into the 1,100-mile trek to San Diego, but he’s never leaked a drip of anything and his AC blows cold nasty. Given the temperatures prevailing across the Southwest this week, what more could I ask for?
